Victor Popow

has been appointed as chief executive officer of the Northwest Law Enforcement Academy effective May 1. The appointment was announced by the academy president, Herb Stephen, (chief of police — retired) who noted Northwest has provided a diploma program in Winnipeg for the past 14 years to prepare graduates for a career in law enforcement. Popow brings to the position an extensive background in human resources after a long career with Air Canada.

 

Curtis Brown

has been appointed vice-president of Probe Research Inc. Brown joined Probe Research in 2008 after serving as a reporter and editorial-page editor with the Brandon Sun. He is a seasoned public-affairs and public-policy professional who provides expert research services to a range of public, private and not-for-profit clients.

 

Mary Lou Mendro

has been promoted to senior research director. Serving as Probe’s labour-market economist, Mendro is also a credentialed evaluator with more than 15 years’ previous experience on Manitoba’s economic-development scene. She now provides critical assessments of labour-market conditions to governments, regional economic-development agencies and sector councils across Canada and the United States.

 

Carol Swerid

has joined McFadden Benefits & Pension as an account manager. Swerid developed her employee-benefits knowledge and skills while working over many years at Great-West Life, most recently as field development manager. Swerid will be working with McFadden Benefits & Pension clients to assist in the management of their employee-benefit programs. She will also be supporting Kevin McFadden, president, with strategic growth initiatives.

 

Stuart Blake,

a partner of Fillmore Riley LLP, has been appointed the local Winnipeg campaign committee representative for Canadian Blood Services’ For All Canadians campaign. The fundraising campaign For All Canadians has been set in motion to raise funds to help build a national public cord-blood bank. Canada is the only G8 country that does not have a national public cord blood program. The goal of the three-year campaign is to transform stem-cell donation in Canada by creating a new system that will collect and store stem cells from cord-blood donations that represent the unique multi-ethnic communities in Canada.

 

AWARDS

The Assiniboine Park and Zoo

app has been named Official Webby Honouree in the Augmented Reality category in the 18th annual Webby Awards. Local branding and interactive studio Relish New Brand Experience developed the application.

 

The Manitoba Physiotherapy Association honoured two members at their annual meeting. Evelyn Lightly was presented with the Susan A. Macdonald Award for demonstrating strong commitment, integrity and professionalism. Leah Dlot was presented the Leonore Saunders Mentorship Award by Mrs. Saunders OM. This award acknowledges physiotherapists in mid-career who provide inspiration to colleagues by acting as role models for their profession.

 

Manitoba Pork presented the 2014 Pork Industry Awards at its recent annual meeting in Winnipeg. These awards are presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the agriculture and hog sector in Manitoba. H@ms Marketing Services received the Innovation Award in recognition of significant contributions to the provincial hog sector through leadership, dedication and continuous innovation in the development and delivery of high-calibre risk management, market intelligence and marketing services. Dr. Wayne Lees, former Manitoba chief veterinary officer, received the Award of Distinction for his outstanding contributions to the agriculture sector in Manitoba through progressive leadership, keen knowledge and deep commitment to fostering collaborative and long-standing relationships with the producer community to enhance and support the health and well-being of livestock and delivery of a safe food supply.
