THE Yorkton Terriers took a bite out of the Dauphin Kings’ RBC Cup plans Saturday night, but the Kings have one final chance to keep their dream alive.
The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Terriers, led by a four-goal, five-point effort by Brett Boehm, knocked off the Kings 5-4 in the championship final of the Western Canada Cup Saturday to punch their ticket to the RBC Cup, the Junior A national championship, later this month in Vernon, B.C.
Playing in front of a packed house at Credit Union Place in Dauphin — the joint was jumping with hundreds of Yorkton fans who made the 90-minute trek east — the Terriers scored three times in the final period, including two of Boehm’s four goals, both of them in the final five minutes.
Yorkton’s other goal came courtesy of Tayler Thompson, and Dylan Butler, Tanner Butler, Brent Wold and Brayden Cuthbert scored for the Kings.
“We just played Terrier hockey,” Thompson told CKDM radio in Dauphin during Saturday’s post-game celebration. “We kept things simple, got pucks in deep, got shots on goal, and things just played out for us.
“This is surreal. We’ve worked so hard all year and this is what we worked for — we wanted to get to the RBC, and this is an unbelievable feeling right now.”
Dauphin’s season isn’t over, however, as they have a last chance to earn a trip to the RBC Cup in today’s berth game against the Spruce Grove Saints at 4 p.m.
The Saints won Saturday’s elimination game with a 5-3 win over the Coquitlam Express. Spruce Grove fell behind 2-0 in the first 4:10 of the game on Express goals by Zach Hodder and Cody Boyd, but then scored five straight, courtesy of Tristan Sieben, Cameron Hughes, Dylan Hollman, Jake Mykitiuk and Carson Samoridny. They held on after a Canon Pieper goal pulled Coquitlam to within two late in the game.
