While the Winnipeg International Jazz Festival might have you tapping your feet to a soulful beat, Peg-City has a whole lot of sole going on in more ways than one.
Preparations for the second annual Winnipeg’s Got Sole sneaker swap are well underway and organizers say this year is even bigger and better on the heels of last year’s inaugural event.
“Last year’s first annual Sneaker Swap Expo was a huge success. Over 500 patrons come through the doors, and we also donated over 450 pairs of gently used sneakers to Siloam Mission and Basketball Manitoba for their Youth Recycling program,” says organizer Frendell Cano.
Winnipeg’s Got Sole is like going to sneaker heaven for the urbanite with a penchant for cool kicks. This year, organizers have added double the amount of vendors buying, selling and trading the hottest streetwear brands.
“This year is the first time that we have partnered with The Urban Bakery, The Final Destination. Royal Sports as well offered booth tables to local sneaker heads. So you can expect to see kicks from Jordans to Asics, Nike, Adidas to New Balance and much more,” says Cano, adding that sneaker aficionados are also encouraged to bring any kicks that they would like to sell or trade.
Winnipeg’s Got Sole was created with the idea of holding an event that would be positive in the community, while doing something the organizers were passionate about — collecting sneakers.
“The inspiration to create the annual Winnipeg sneaker swap expo was based on the understanding that our city had never actually had a unique event specific to sneakers.
“It was created primarily to be a safe and friendly environment where all people, sneakers and non-sneakers connoisseurs alike, can come and celebrate the sneaker culture in our city, connect with each other and most importantly raise awareness that there are people out there who cannot afford to even buy a pair of sneakers,” says Cano.
All of the proceeds and money raised in our events goes back to the charity to fund future programs and initiatives at Siloam Mission and Basketball Manitoba.
Winnipeg’s Got Sole Sneaker Swap Expo takes place on June 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bronx Park Community Centre, 720 Henderson Hwy. Tickets can be purchased at The Urban Bakery, The Final Destination, Royal Sports, Modern Bao House and Red Ronin.
