Daniel Blaikie’s legendary last name and low-key organizing bested inveterate party outsider Jim Maloway Monday night.
Blaikie, an electrician and new father, beat the Elmwood MLA to win the NDP’s nomination in the federal riding of Elmwood-Transcona.
The east Winnipeg constituency was home to one of several hotly contested nomination meetings in recent weeks, as the parties gear up for a federal election in a little more than a year and a provincial race expected in the spring of 2016. Elmwood-Transcona was held for decades by New Democrat Bill Blaikie, the elder statesman of his party and Daniel’s father. Maloway lost the riding to Conservative Lawrence Toet in 2011 and returned to where his political career began, as a Manitoba MLA.
Maloway, whose support base is in the provincial riding of Elmwood, irked many NDPers by using his MLA mailing privileges to send flyers touting his work on federal issues into the Transcona half of the federal riding. But he also rallied significant support among the area’s ethnic communities, including the Chileans.
Blaikie waged a quieter campaign based on coffee parties and neighbourhood outreach with the help of several key NDP strategists, including former cabinet minister and veteran campaign manager Becky Barrett.
More than 500 party members attended the nomination meeting at Club Regent.
