Winnipeg no longer has a Redwood Bridge.

On Wednesday afternoon, city council voted unanimously ‎to change the name of the 106-year-old bridge connecting Elmwood to the North End after former Mynarski Coun. Harry Lazarenko.

Lazarenko served council for two stints spanning 30 years‎. He served from 1974 to 1977 and then 1983 to 2010. He suffered a brain aneurysm in May 2010 and did not return to council.

His successor in Mynarksi, Coun. Ross Eadie, tried to rename Machray Park after Lazarenko, but was rebuffed by a coalition of community groups.

Mayor Sam Katz seconded Eadie’s motion.

Redwood Bridge, built in 1908, appears to be named after Alfred Boyd, who owned a red-roofed store near the bridge‎, or another store owner.

It is Winnipeg’s oldest bridge.
