Winnipeg no longer has a Redwood Bridge.
On Wednesday afternoon, city council voted unanimously to change the name of the 106-year-old bridge connecting Elmwood to the North End after former Mynarski Coun. Harry Lazarenko.
Lazarenko served council for two stints spanning 30 years. He served from 1974 to 1977 and then 1983 to 2010. He suffered a brain aneurysm in May 2010 and did not return to council.
His successor in Mynarksi, Coun. Ross Eadie, tried to rename Machray Park after Lazarenko, but was rebuffed by a coalition of community groups.
Mayor Sam Katz seconded Eadie’s motion.
Redwood Bridge, built in 1908, appears to be named after Alfred Boyd, who owned a red-roofed store near the bridge, or another store owner.
It is Winnipeg’s oldest bridge.
