The real response won’t be measured until the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back on the Friday in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions.
But head coach Mike O’Shea did like what he saw from the troops Sunday when they gathered to break down the game film from last Thursday’s 26-3 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos that dropped them to 3-1.
“Accountability. Communication. You get a bunch of guys in the room where mistakes are happening and they’re talking about it,” said O’Shea when asked what he liked from the initial response from his charges.
“It’s not just the coaches talking, it’s the players talking about the call, the read, what did they see, what they didn’t see and how it’s going to work next time. There’s accountability to the group, which is good.”
The Bombers, who are back on the practice field Monday, will play their next two on the road, beginning with the matchup with the 2-2 Lions, fresh from their 41-5 devouring of the Montreal Alouettes Saturday night. That will be followed by a game in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats.
O’Shea said Sunday punter Mike Renaud, who injured his hamstring in the pre-game warm-up prior to the Edmonton game, will be down for several weeks. He was replaced by Lirim Hajrullahu, who had a 45.2-yard average and will continue to handle them going forward. The club is not planning on bringing in another kicker.
“You have to remember, he’s a rookie… his tunnel vision is pretty good for a young guy,” said O’Shea. “He’s pretty focused at what he does. He’s kind of oblivious to the other stuff going on around him.”
O’Shea said that safety Moe Leggett has been green-lighted to return and left guard Chris Greaves, will be back on the field, although his work this week might be limited. Slotback Cory Watson (hamstrong) is still out. It’s still doubtful Aaron Kelly, who has a knee injury, will play.
PERFECT TIMING: The Lions announced Sunday that they will honour the career of Geroy Simon, who will receive the highest recognition the club can bestow upon a former player by being added to the Ring of Honour during halftime. Simon began his CFL career with the Bombers in 1999.
