Captain of Manitoba Rage women’s ball hockey team

Accomplishments: Family and University of Manitoba bonds were never too far away from Chantal Larocque, captain of the Manitoba Rage provincial women’s ball hockey team, at the recent 2014 national championship. While the team, which placed seventh, featured her younger sister and 2014 Olympic women’s ice hockey gold medallist Jocelyne Larocque, it also included six former U of M Bisons.

“Ball hockey (the provincial team) has given us a chance to play together, which we really haven’t been able to do since we were kids, and it’s a lot of fun to have all the former Bisons together,” said Chantal, who has won silver (2010), bronze (2011) and placed fourth (2012) at previous nationals.

While she and Jocelyne train in CrossFit several times per week during the summer, (Jocelyne recently became a certified CrossFit trainer), ball hockey is Chantal’s main fitness focus in the warmer months. Chantal plays four times per week with two teams, the Rage and a mixed squad.

After playing ice hockey for the Bisons, University of Minnesota-Duluth and the Manitoba Maple Leafs senior women’s team, Chantal has moved into the ice hockey coaching ranks. She is the head coach of the Eastman female AAA midget hockey team and leads the Eastman team’s off-ice sessions through the summer.

1. Favourite workout?

My sister has introduced me to CrossFit, which I’m starting to really enjoy — shorter workouts and Olympic lifting. I also could never live without hockey… especially ball hockey!

2. Favourite workout song?

Right now it would have to be Work or Fancy by Iggy Azalea, otherwise I love all country music especially anything from Blake Sheldon or Jason Aldean.

3. Fitness tip?

Work out with someone who pushes you. I love working out with people who are competitive. Makes me always want to become better!
