It’s been almost 20 years since Keanu Reeves appeared on the MTC stage to perform Hamlet and the John Wick star says has no specific plans to return to the stage. “I think about it and I would love to do either a Shakespeare or a new play,” he says. Reeves did entertain the idea of making a film version of Macbeth, “but it didn’t work out. And now Kenneth Branagh’s doing it, so that’s good.” If it’s difficult to picture the former Ted Logan as Shakespeare’s bloody-minded usurper, check out a scene in John Wick when his vengeance-driven assassin confronts the father of his intended victim in a state of full-blooded fury. The character, Reeves acknowledges, “would give a good ‘tomorrow and tomorrow’ speech.”

Deadly musical

For trick-or-treaters long past waiting with Linus and Sally for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin comes a blood-splattered Halloween treat called Evil Dead: The Musical. The theatrical production, based on the cult horror movie series Evil Dead, is making its Winnipeg debut with a run starting Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Park Theatre. The dancing-and-dismemberment spectacle will be preceded by a guest appearance by Elvis impersonator Dave Greene, in a tribute to Bruce Campbell’s portrayal of the King in the 2002 horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep.

Bennett and Gaga make beautiful music together

They say it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing — if that’s the case, the PBS/Great Performances special Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek LIVE! must be a very meaningful TV special. In this hour-long concert, which was recorded July 28 at Lincoln Center and airs Friday, Oct. 24, at 9 p.m. on PBS, the 88-year-old crooner and the 28-year-old pop diva meld voices seamlessly as they serve up swinging duet versions of such standards as Anything Goes, I Won’t Dance, It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got that Swing), Firefly and the title track, Cheek to Cheek.

Growler-filling stations get local brew flowing

Starting Friday, Oct. 24, beer lovers in Manitoba will get to experience local brews in a new format — specifically, in 1.89-litre refillable bottles known as growlers. Select Manitoba Liquor Marts and beer vendors are rolling out growler-filling stations, which will offer beer from local breweries Half Pints and Fort Garry to fill/refill the growlers. (Half Pints will also have its own growler-filling station.) While Kenora’s Lake of the Woods Brewing Co. has growlers of its Sultana Gold Ale on Liquor Mart shelves, they’re not currently refillable here. For info on growler-filling station locations and more, visit www.liquormarts.ca.

Police HQ report ‘outrageous’: Kinew

Joyanne Pursaga 6 minute read 6:18 PM CDT

Premier Wab Kinew says public inquiry findings that taxpayers were overcharged more than $40 million for the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters project and two city leaders broke the public trust are “outrageous.”

Inquiry commissioner Garth Smorang’s report, which was released Monday, concluded former mayor Sam Katz “violated the public trust” and council code of conduct, while the city’s former chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl suffered from a “complete lack of a moral compass.”

Smorang also found the city was overcharged $43.3 million for the project, with $42 million of that going to key contractor Caspian Projects.

“It’s outrageous that people who were elected betrayed the public here in the city. It’s outrageous that there were people in business who ripped you off, ripped me off — I was paying property taxes in Winnipeg at the time — and ripped all of us off to the tune of $43.3 million. That’s crazy,” said Kinew.

Policy change gives Manitoba renters a break from proposed hikes

Aidan Wilson said he was reduced to tears after getting a call from Premier Wab Kinew’s office.

He’d just learned tenants of a West Broadway apartment, including himself, would no longer pay a hundreds-of-dollars monthly rent increase as of Nov. 1.

“It’s been a lot to deal with, it’s a lot to push for, and it’s a lot to speak up. All of these emotions just kind of came flooding out,” Wilson said Tuesday at a news conference alongside Kinew.

The premier announced that renters will not have to pay the increases until the provincial Residential Tenancies Branch hears landlords’ arguments and issues its decisions.

Barron brothers clash for eighth NHL dogfight

ST. LOUIS — This is what all of those endless games of mini sticks, countless hours on the outdoor rinks and extra reps in the gym were meant to bring about one day.

While the shine might not be quite as bright for Morgan and Justin Barron, the appreciation for the opportunity to go head-to-head in an NHL rink has yet to dull and it’s not something they’re about to take for granted.

Tuesday’s clash against the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues marked the eighth NHL meeting between the Barron brothers, who took divergent paths after growing up in Halifax.

“I’m always pulling for him and then all of a sudden, you’re fighting in the corner for a puck,” Morgan recalled after the morning skate on Tuesday. “It’s no different than in the summer or playing mini sticks in the basement and all of that stuff.

New twist in Hellebuyck saga, suspension ends Friday

Connor Hellebuyck has played the reverse Uno card. What we don’t know is if he has any intention of coming back to friendly Manitoba or if this is simply the latest attempt to put the Winnipeg Jets' feet to the flames in an effort to move him to an American market.

Assini Group seeks to bring more mining opportunities to 10 participating First Nations

Gabrielle Piché 6 minute read 7:05 PM CDT

A group of Treaty 5 First Nations have partnered to boost their role in mineral development.

“People want jobs. People want to work. People want to make a living,” said Chemawawin Cree Nation Chief Clarence Easter. He’s also president of the Assini Group.

The company, which incorporated in 2015, encompasses 10 First Nations spanning northern Manitoba. The Assini Group hasn’t inked many deals with other firms.

However, as the provincial government aims to triple mining in five years, Assini Group leads are ramping up operations.
