Manitoba Muslims condemn attacks

Manitoba’s oldest and biggest Muslim organization has denounced the attacks in Ottawa and Montreal this week that claimed the lives of two Canadian soldiers.

“…Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved one, especially the soldiers who lost their lives,” in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, the president of the Manitoba Islamic Association Idris Elbakri said in a news release. “Our community stands united against this crime, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators. This position is rooted in our faith tradition and our love for Canada,” he said.

Members of the Muslim community are grateful for the sacrifices and professionalism of our security forces that, by all accounts, averted a greater tragedy, the press release said. They also commended Canadian officials and mainstream media for its responsible reporting of the tragic events and avoiding associating the perpetrators with a religious or cultural group until facts were established. “Such associations would add fear to the grief that Muslims feel over the loss of life and the attacks on the very symbols of our freedom and democracy,” the release said.
