ABOUT THE ISLANDERS
The Islanders are 6-2-0 to start the season, their second-best record (they were 6-0-1-1 in 2001-02) since their 1980s dynasty. Win No. 6 came Sunday night in front of 15,208 at Nassau Coliseum as Frans Nielsen netted a hat-trick in the third period in a 7-5 victory over Dallas.
After getting markers from Anders Lee, Nikolay Kulemin and Lubomir Visnovsky, the Isles now have 31 goals from 15 different players. By comparison, the Jets have just 15 goals from seven players — one third of those from Bryan Little.
FYI: The seven goals against the Stars came without superstar John Tavares picking up a single point… Sunday’s win over Dallas was the first of eight consecutive games for the Isles against the Western Conference… The Isles have missed the playoffs six times in the last seven years.
Nielsen became the third Danish-born player to record a hat trick — and the second this season. Montreal’s Lars Eller had four goals against the Jets on January, 4th, 2012 while Arizona’s Mikael Boedker picked up a hatty against Edmonton earlier this month.
The Islanders are atop the Metropolitan Division with 12 points — two more than the Jets opponent on Thursday, the New Jersey Devils.
Chad Johnson has backstopped New York to two straight wins, but Jaroslav Halak has won five straight against the Jets with a 2.08 GAA.
Jack Capuano is second on the Islanders all-time coaching-wins list with 124, but he’s eons behind the legendary Al Arbour, who is first with 740.
