It’s not surprising pass thief Rod Hill has run away with the defensive back position on our All-Time Blue Bombers Team.

Hill edged out fellow candidates, Jovon Johnson, Ken Hailey, Norm Rauhaus and Gord Rowland.

Hill joined the Bombers in 1988 and was instantly a dominant player, holding down the corner for five seasons while contributing to a pair of Grey Cups.

Arlen Redekop / The Canadian Press files Winnipeg Blue Bombers Rod Hill holds the CFL Grey Cup after defeating Edmonton Eskimos 50-11 in Vancouver on Nov. 25, 1990.

Hill was a CFL all-star twice and retired with a number of records, including career interceptions (47), most interceptions in one game (five) and career blocked punts (eight).

His best day with the Bombers came in the fall of the 1990 seasons when he picked off a CFL-record five passes in a game against Hamilton.

Hill was also a specialist at blocking punts; he sits third on the all-time CFL list with eight blocks in his career. He added another two blocked punts in playoff action.

Voters have selected Ken Ploen as the quarterback, Chris Walby as the offensive lineman, Greg Battle as the linebacker, Bob Cameron as the kicker, Leo Lewis as kick returner and running back, Doug Brown as the defensive lineman and Hill as the defensive back of the Free Press/TSN 1290 All-Time Bombers Team.

Voting began Monday and fans were given the choice of five DBs as chosen by the All-Time Blue Bombers Team panel, comprising legendary coach Bud Grant, former player and GM Paul Robson, Hall of Fame football writer Ed Tait, Andrew (Hustler) Paterson from TSN 1290 and myself.

Next up is receiver. The Free Press print and digital editions as well as tsn1290.ca will run stories Monday outlining the careers of the finalists selected by our panel.

Voting will take place on both websites.

Vote a maximum of once per day and help choose the Blue Bombers player you consider the best at the following positions, to be presented in this order: Quarterback, offensive lineman, linebacker, kicker, kick returner, running back, defensive lineman, defensive back and receiver.
