A Comprehensive Look at Winnipeg’s Big, Dumb Rock n’ Roll History

bit.ly/rock_history

After tackling Winnipeg’s noise-rock and politically correct punk history, local writer Sheldon Birnie is turning his attention to the raw, garage-rock fuelled bands that helped define the city’s music scene in the first decade of the 21st century. From the VaGiants’ rambunctious vibes to the punk-inflected Fabulous Kildonans to the Hot Live Guys, Noisey shines a light on some of the province’s sweat-soaked rock acts. “The music was just hard and loud and as fast as possible,” says Andy Savant of yesterday’s rock ‘n’ roll. “Just a greasy, sweaty, big drunk mess.”

Video of the Week: Afrika Bambaataa Renegades of Funk

bit.ly/renegades_of_funk

Considered to be one of the innovators connecting the dots between hip hop and electronic music, New York DJ and producer Afrika Bambaataa’s influence on modern music is monumental. With a collection of more than 40,000 records that is being digitized and held as a permanent archive at Cornell University, Bambaataa has given DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist unprecedented access to his vinyl for a special tour that Winnipeg is lucky to get on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Garrick. “This has never been done before, definitely not on this scale. They’re his records, with his blessings. This isn’t just any copy of X breakbeat, it’s the copy, the copy that started everything. Not just any records, the master of records’ records” explains DJ Shadow, enthusiastically. “The program will be multifaceted… Bambaataa as artist, exploring the influence of his classics like Planet Rock; Bambaataa as collector, and the genre-defining breaks he discovered; and Bambaataa as peacemaker and force for social change. He influenced an entire generation worldwide, so we feel a great obligation to get it right.” Winnipeg vinyl junkie DJ Hunnicutt will open the show with an all 7-inch set. Tickets for the Renegades of Rhythm tour are $32.50 at jazzwinnipeg.com or in person at Music Trader, The Urban Bakery and the Jazz Winnipeg office.

Stream of the Week: John K. Samson — The Boat Dreams From The Hill (Jawbreaker cover)

 bit.ly/jks_jawbreaker

20 years after the release of Jawbreaker’s influential album, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, John K. Samson’s cover of The Boat Dreams From The Hill is a not-so-subtle reminder about the impact the band had on literary-leaning, heart-on-your-sleeve former punks like JKS and a whole generation of music fans. Samson has never shied away from his love of Blake Schwarzenbach’s lyrical style and how important Jawbreaker is to him as an artist. In a rare local appearance, JKS will play a solo show at the recently opened Good Will Social Club on Sunday, Nov. 23. Winnipeg singer-songwriter Tom Keenan opens. Samson doesn’t perform these solo and acoustic shows very often, so it isn’t surprising the concert is already sold out.

Wooed by wood, Cedarella founder takes pride in handcrafted designs

David Sanderson 7 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

Marina Bulan is the founder of Cedarella, a two-year-old venture that turns out eye-catching wood products such as jewelry, kitchen decor, children’s toys and, most recently, metre-high outdoor planters that double as home street-number indicators.

Ahead of immigrating to Winnipeg a decade ago from their native Russia, Bulan and her partner thought it would be prudent to conduct some research on their soon-to-be new home, a city they knew next to nothing about.

Imagine their surprise as they were viewing the 2007 surrealist film My Winnipeg, which comically blends historical facts about our burg with what Winnipeg-born writer/director Guy Maddin has termed “mystical hypothesizing.”

(For instance, there is no proof that, as reported in the award-winning flick, Winnipeg is the sleepwalking capital of the world, and that residents keep keys to their former abodes on their person in the event they turn up there during a bout of somnambulism.)

Canada vows dollar-for-dollar tariff retaliation, suspends trade talks with U.S.

Catherine Morrison, The Canadian Press 7 minute read Updated: 8:27 AM CDT

OTTAWA - A last-ditch effort to reach a new trade deal before a midnight tariff deadline failed Friday, as Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended talks with the United States and summoned his negotiators back to Ottawa.

The decision meant new 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian exports to the U.S. took effect at 12:01 a.m., and Carney vowed Canada would retaliate with equal measures of its own.

"In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada's position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S.," Carney said in a statement just before Trump's tariff deadline.

"However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians."

Seniors left hanging during Bell MTS outage: property manager

Shelly Durham said when it comes to many of her elderly tenants of a downtown highrise apartment, their landline is their lifeline.

That lifeline was disconnected Tuesday after a copper cable that provides telephone service was cut Tuesday during construction work.

“It could be a matter of life and death,” said Durham, the building manager at Broadview Manor. “That’s the scary part.”

Manitoba Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura said a contractor working for the utility contacted the underground communications cable while installing a streetlight cable.
