BLACK Friday is going hi-tech at Polo Park.

The shopping centre is looking to take the physical exertion out of what is fast becoming one of the busiest shopping days of the year with the launch of a smartphone app. Shoppers who download the app, called CF Shop! — the CF stands for Cadillac Fairview, the company that owns the mall — will be able to see the specials all the mall’s stores are offering.

“We’re trying to make it easier for people. Everybody is so into their phones or tablets. If you want to look up your favourite store, you can use the app to see what kind of special they have on. It will make shopping easy,” said Deborah Green, general manager of Polo Park.

It’s also hoped it will help keep shoppers at home. Every year, Canadian retailers up the ante in their efforts to keep domestic shoppers from making a run for the border.

“With some of the stores we have added this year, you don’t need to cross the border. We also have a lot of stores that aren’t in Grand Forks or Fargo. You’d have to go all the way to Minneapolis to go to a Disney, Urban Outfitters, Banana Republic, H&M or Anthropologie,” she said.

This is Polo Park’s third Black Friday sale. Green said the traffic has grown “by leaps and bounds” every successive year.

Some stores discounted some of their merchandise before the big shopping day.

“It’s almost Black Friday week,” she said.

The CF Shop! app is available on Polo Park’s website.
