The annual bicycle pilgrimage to the 2015 Winnipeg Folk Festival began this morning.
Festival-goers started cycling out at 5:45 a.m. and 6 a.m. from the Forks. About 250 cyclists are registered to take part. The line of cyclists pedalled on the shoulder of Highway 59.
A straggler group departs at 11 a.m. Camping gear is shuttled to the site by folk festival vans.
It’s the sixth year for Bike Ride to Site. The two-hour cycle saves an estimated two metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, festival organizers say. This is equal to carbon sequestered by 53 tree seedlings grown over 10 years.
The west gate of Birds Hill Provincial Park opened at 7 a.m. The box office opens at 8 a.m.
While camping starts today, the music doesn’t start until Thursday.
The folk festival experimented with Wednesday concerts but found it was too much for organizers and attendees.
