MONTREAL (CP) – Loblaw’s Provigo Inc. (TSX:L) is closing’ Maxi and Provigo supermarkets in Quebec in early 2007, citing their unprofitability.

Provigo said Thursday it will continue to implement its development plan in Quebec, noting it has invested “significant capital” in its retail and store support network and has created more than 2,000 jobs.

“After analyzing the location and strategic position of each store in its market, Provigo decided to close these’ stores since their volume of business does not allow them to profitably offer the entire line of products and services needed to serve customers appropriately,” the firm said.

“This is a responsible long-term business decision intended to reinforce and develop the entire network.”

The company said it will do everything it can to minimize the impact of this announcement on the employees concerned. Job-cut numbers were not immediately available.

The Provigo, L’intermarche, Axep, Maxi, Maxi & Cie and Loblaws banners are present in every region of Quebec through their network of more than 400 stores.

Provigo and its franchisees and partners employ nearly 30,000 people in Quebec.
