WITH 10 studio albums under its belt, 54°40 doesn't need an excuse to go on tour, assuming the usual excuse is a new album to hock. Nevertheless, the Vancouver rock band is touring Canada to promote Radio Love Songs: The Singles Collection, a greatest-hits package spanning the past two decades. The quartet plays The Colosseum in Windsor Park on Wednesday. Radio Love Songs actually is the fourth compilation in the band's career. They previously put out a double-live CD called Heavy Mellow, a rarities disc called Sound Of Truth and an earlier greatest-hits album called Sweeter Things. The idea behind the new collection is getting all the band's hits in one place. For 5440, that meant re-recording songs like Baby Ran, One Gun and One Day In Your Life, whose rights remain in the hands of a former record label. On Wednesday, the band's set will consist of all 19 songs on the new compilation. "We'll do every single on the CD and still people will come up to us after the show and say, 'You didn't play my favourite song,' " says guitarist Phil Comparelli. He figures the secret to his band's longevity is constant change, and perhaps the absence of stress. "We get along better than ever," he says. "We've already had all those all-night conversations about the meaning of dust particles in the universe." Tickets for Wednesday's show are $15 at 694-7569 or the Windsor Park Canad Inn front desk.
