Coaches are hired to be fired as the saying goes. While some coaching changes are handled with tact and after a bench boss has been given an acceptable amount of time to mould a team into a winner, there are exceptions to the rule. Sometimes a coach gets fired for good reason but doesn’t accept the news gracefully. Here are a few examples of deranged dismissals:
Claude Julien — Julien’s New Jersey Devils led their division and were headed for a No. 2 seed in the NHL’s Eastern Conference when GM Lou Lamoriello gassed him, saying he didn’t think the Devils were ready for the playoffs.
Robbie Ftorek — Lamoriello has been down this road before. Late in the 1999-2000 season, the Devils GM let Ftorek and his ill-chosen sweater vests go. Larry Robinson stepped in and the Devils won the Stanley Cup.
Roger Neilson — The late great Captain Video seemed to always be getting canned for one reason or another. Leafs owner Harold Ballard fired him one day, only to tell Neilson if he returned to the bench with a bag over his head he could keep his gig. Neilson was also relieved of his duties as coach of the Philadelphia Flyers after he was diagnosed with cancer and “went goofy” according to then Flyers GM Bob Clarke.
Jean Perron — After 50 games as head coach of the Moose, Perron was let go with a 16-26-0-8 record. Moose chairman Mark Chipman let him go and the discussion that went on between the two is the stuff of Moose lore. The next day, Perron held his own press conference to air out Chipman and the Moose organization. He later filed suit but nothing came of the civil matter.
