Jarvis brings Stanley Cup to where it all began

Seth Jarvis and Lord Stanley had quite the homecoming celebration with thousands of fans lining up for their arrival — some even before the sun graced the sky.

The Winnipeg community showed up to cheer on one of their own, wearing memorabilia of all of Jarvis’s achievements, with Tuxedo Lightning, Team Canada, and Carolina Hurricane jerseys aplenty in the crowd.

The Tuxedo Community Centre — where Jarvis’s storied career all began — had fans from all walks of life lined up, circling the building and fields, for the opportunity to meet the Stanley Cup champion and touch the trophy themselves.

Throughout the line, lawn chairs were assembled, picnic blankets were spread out, and umbrellas were opened — all prepared for the long wait ahead of them.

GM's plan to install a diesel engine in its mid-size Chevrolet Colorado was never a secret, but the automaker has finally confirmed that the engine is a 2.8-litre Duramax with 369 pound-feet of torque.

That's a huge number for a mid-size truck -- Ford's 5.0-L V-8 in the full-sized F-150 produces 387 lb-ft -- and GM says its four-cylinder turbodiesel is good for 7,600 pounds of towing with four-wheel-drive models.

The diesel will get best-in-class fuel economy, Chevy claims, though the company didn't release figures. The addition makes the Colorado (and GMC Canyon) the first and only diesel options available for a mid-size pickup in North America. The truck competes against the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.

"It is a no-compromise turbocharged engine that is also really fun to drive, with excellent responsiveness," said Scott Yackley, assistant chief engineer.

50 years of rare tall grass prairie celebrated

Kristin Bestvater is always glad when she heads to Winnipeg’s St. James neighbourhood and visits the Living Prairie Museum.

“It’s beautiful,” Bestvater said of the 13-hectare site, which is one of the last remaining tall grass prairies in North America. “I don’t know how many other cities would have something like this.”

The Island Lakes resident and her nine-year-old son were among the hundreds of people who gathered at the museum on Saturday to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Designated a park in 1974, it officially became the Living Prairie Museum in 1976 with the opening of an interpretive centre which houses a gallery of exhibits, a gift shop and an observation deck.
