THE third edition of the Winnipeg International Film Festival promises some 143 films from 19 countries.

That’s too many films to be summarized here. But we can give you an idea of the feature films that will be on view at the fest for its nine-day run. On the program:

THESE FOOLISH THINGS

Friday, June 1, 7 p.m. / Globe Cinemas

Like the 2005 film Mrs. Henderson Presents, this “romantic dramedy” is set in the British theatre during the Second World War. An aspiring actress (Zoe Trapper) attempts to navigate the ladders to success while avoiding the snake of London’s theatrical establishment. Also starring Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall and Terence Stamp.

BOLLYWOOD NIGHT

Saturday, June 2. / PTE, Colin Jackson Theatre, Globe Cinemas

A double bill of Indian films starts at 3 p.m. at PTE with a screening of Vanaja, the story a low-caste fisherman’s daughter who is destined to be a great dancer. Following at 6 p.m. at the Globe is the film Vivah, a drama about an orphan girl who becomes betrothed to a wealthy industrialist from Delhi. A $20 ticket buys admission to a post-screening Bollywood-night event featuring a live dance performance and Indian food catered by The Clay Oven.

EXPIRATION DATE

Saturday June 2, 8:30 p.m. / PTE Colin Jackson

Charles Silvercloud III is the son and grandson of men who were both killed on their 25th birthdays. Thinking he is fated to die on his upcoming birthday, Charles finds his life turned around by a woman determined to celebrate his 26th. This is a world premiere of an American comedy.

A computer-animated adventure in which members of an intergalactic Star Car racing team set out to win the biggest race in the universe, or risk overthrow by the power-hungry Team Tagmatia.

THE ORANGE CHRONICLES

Sunday, June 3, 1 p.m. / PTE Colin Jackson

A documentary about the so-called Orange Revolution, when thousands took to the streets to protest the falsified 2004 presidential elections in the Ukraine.

CRUEL BUT NECESSARY

Sunday, June 3, 6:30 p.m. / PTE Main Theatre

Wednesday, June 6, 8:30 p.m. / PTE Colin Jackson

A woman documents the breakdown of her own marriage, and the subsequent disasters that befall her, via a hidden camcorder in this voyeuristic comedy drama by actor-director Saul Rubinek, who will present the film Sunday, as well as participating in a filmmaking workshop at Cinematheque from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

TIS AUTUMN — THE SEARCH FOR JACKIE PARIS

Sunday, June 3, 7 p.m. / PTE Colin Jackson

A documentary on Paris, one of the great unsung jazz singers of the mid-20th century, by director Raymond De Felitta, who interviewed Paris himself on his roller-coaster career.

The 14th-century literary classic is told in the medium of puppet theatre as Dante is escorted by the Roman poet Virgil through the nine circles of hell.

DIRTY HABIT

A nun and a crack-addict prostitute get stuck on an elevator… and go for a ride in David Lynch territory in this minimalist psychodrama.

THE QUIETEST SOUND

Saturday, June 9, 3:30 p.m. / PTE Colin Jackson

Even more minimalist is this one-take 75-minute drama starring Catherine E. Johnson as a mother being questioned by the police about the disappearance of her four-year-old daughter.

RUN ROBOT RUN!

Thursday, June 7, 8:30 p.m. / PTE Main Theatre

A Canadian comedy set in the not-too-distant future, where regimented office drone Kent Weston is replaced by a congenial robot named Adam who would appear to be more human than Kent.

FILIPINO NIGHT

Friday, June 8, 7 p.m. / Globe Cinemas

WIFF presents the Philippine-Canadian production of The Inheritance, the story of a brother and sister who are chosen to represent the Canadian branch of the family at the reading of a will after their grandmother dies in Manila. A $15 ticket includes admission to a post-screening party at the Pyramid Cabaret.

THE UNION: THE BUSINESS BEHIND GETTING HIGH

Friday, June 8, 7 p.m. / PTE Main Theatre

WIFF presents the world premiere of this documentary examining the $7-billion marijuana trade in British Columbia, incorporating interviews with growers, cops, politicians and weed advocates.

LET’S ALL HATE TORONTO

Saturday, June 9, 1 p.m. / PTE Main Theatre

It’s the city Canadians love to hate, and we experience the nation’s bias first hand as we follow “Mister Toronto” on a bogus cross-country “Toronto Appreciation” tour, eliciting a cavalcade of anti-Toronto sentiment.
