One of the first all-candidates debates in Winnipeg has been announced, but so far no Conservative candidate has been attached to the event.

The Downtown BIZ announced Thursday it is hosting candidates from Winnipeg Centre on Sept. 16 to discuss their party’s platform on key downtown issues.

Candidate Allie Szarkiewicz, a former schoolteacher who ran for school board trustee in Silver Heights-Booth Ward last year, was only recently nominated for the Conservatives after their previous candidate, Bev Pitura had to drop out of the race for personal reasons.

When reached by phone on Thursday, Szarkiewicz said she wasn’t aware of the event, but asked for more information.

Jason Syvixay, managing director of the BIZ, said all candidates are invited to attend the debate.

Incumbent New Democrat MP Pat Martin, Liberal candidate Robert-Falcon Ouellette and Green Party candidate Don Woodstock have all agreed to participate in the debate.

“This is the public’s chance to hear the parties go on the record on key issues that are pivotal in moving our province, city and our downtown forward,” said Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ executive director in the release. “The continued revitalization and health of our downtown is important to our 1,300 business members, and I believe, to all of Manitobans.”
