Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger said today he’s spoken to Southdale MLA Ernin Selby about her running for federal office.
“People make careful considerations about what their choices are and they bring a lot of experience,” Selinger said after touring the University of Winnipeg’s Science Adventures Summer Camp program. “We have chatted.”
Selby was health minister until last fall when she and four other senior cabinet members resigned in an unsuccessful bid to pressure Selinger to step down, to help stop the NDP government’s slide in popularity.
Rumours about Selby seeking the NDP nomination St. Boniface-St. Vital, which Conservative Shelly Glover has held since 2008, have been circulating for a few weeks. Glover isn’t running again in this election and is to return her job with the Winnipeg Police Service.
Former city councillor Dan Vandal is running for the Liberals and became the favourite when Glover stepped aside. He is being challenged by Conservative Francois Catellier, an agri-business consultant, and musician Glenn Zaretski for the Green Party.
Selby has said she has not yet made up her mind about running.
“It’s an honour to represent the families of Southdale, and that continues to be my focus. A number of friends and neighbours have approached me about running federally because they want to see change in Ottawa – and in this election, the only person who can deliver change is Tom Mulcair. At this point, I have not made any decisions,” Selby said Saturday in an email to the Free Press.
NDP leader Tom Mulcair has hinted that there is a star candidate in Manitoba who will announce within the next two weeks.
