WHEN you can achieve four-cylinder fuel economy with the power of a V6, why build the four-banger?

That appears to be part of the reason Toyota is shelving the four-cylinder motor that once powered the Solara in base form, opting for 2008 to bring the car to market with a 3.5-litre V6 as the only engine choice.

The engine delivers 210 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 220 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm. The only transmission of choice is a five-speed automatic. Still, the car is rated 11.5 litres per 100 km city and 7.3 litres per 100 km highway. Those figures rise by a tenth of a litre for the convertible, due to the added weight and drag due to the top.

The body style is largely unchanged.

The 2008 Solara Coupe retails for $36,975 while the convertible is listed at $39,900. It is on sale now.

The SLE Coupe and SLE Convertible are the only Solara models offered.
