Transit driver a tough job

Re: Transit drivers assaulted 225 times in the past four years (Sept. 13) Driving a bus is not an easy job. Dealing with traffic and idiots on board at the same time has got to be stressful.

I’m sure they’re dreading the decrease in bus service. More crammed buses equals more unhappy, testy passengers. Everyone’s stress level will be going up in the coming weeks.

These are frightening numbers. I don’t care how frustrated passengers become, violent behaviours (including verbal abuse) are totally inexcusable. Bus drivers are not responsible for all of transit’s problems. Bus drivers are human beings — they’re not punching bags.

Bus drivers don’t set the fares or make the rules. They are paid to drive buses on an assigned route, pick up and drop off passengers, and collect fares. They’re not paid enough to put up with this kind of crap.

We don’t have enough money to pay transit workers competitive rates but we have money to put police on buses?

Maybe we should just have the police driving the buses.

Claiming it’s impractical to put police on buses because there are too many buses and too many routes is akin to saying it’s impractical to have police patrol the streets. It’s an asinine assertion.

Put undercover cops on a few of the more problematic buses and maybe people will behave themselves more often.

London flight added

Re: WestJet to fly direct to London from Winnipeg (Sept. 14). Awesome — now let’s hope the prices allow for the regional population to support this endeavour.

This could make Winnipeg a pseudo-hub for travel to Europe (drawing from Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Northwestern Ontario and possibly even Alberta).

One flight a week means this is basically just for vacationers, but hey, it’s a start.

@lollipopsandsunshine: I imagine there’s a return flight sometime during the week. At any rate I don’t know that there would be many commuting from London. Once a week is a good start.
