He was a rare bright spot for the Blue Bombers in a difficult season, and now Jamaal Westerman is in the running to be named the CFL’s most outstanding Canadian.
On Thursday, the CFL announced that the Bombers defensive end was the West Division finalist for the most outstanding Canadian award. That pits him against Ottawa Redblacks receiver Brad Sinopoli for the league title, which will be announced at the CFL’s annual player awards ceremony on Nov. 26.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for your work, and this nomination is a testament to our entire defensive line, and Coach Howard,” Westerman said in a statement. “Brad Sinopoli also had a great season for Ottawa, and his recognition from the East is very well deserved.”
Westerman ground out 17 sacks in his first CFL season, the second-highest tally in the league. The former NFL player also collected 61 defensive tackles, and played in all 18 games. The Bombers nominated him for top player and top defensive player, as well as their outstanding Canadian. He was also named a division all-star earlier this week.
