Manitoba has created a new wildlife management area and expanded an ecological reserve in a low-lying section of the province between Swan River and The Pas.

The province plans to create the 900-square-kilometre Red Deer Wildlife Management Area, which protects wetlands and a section around Overflowing River northwest of Lake Winnipegosis.

It also plans to expand the Lake Winnipegosis Salt Flats Ecological Reserve to the immediate south from six square kilometres to 47 square kilometres.

The moves will protect habitat for caribou, migrating birds and salt-tolerant plants that are uncommon in this province, Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship said.

The province also plans to protected more areas from development over the next five years but has yet to determine precisely where.
