The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have locked up one of their young guns along the offensive line.

The Bombers announced Monday they have extended the contract of centre Matthias Goossen through the 2018 season.

The deal is significant because the 23-year-old replaced Dominic Picard at centre during the season, starting the last six games for the Bombers. His return could affect the status of Picard, a veteran on the team, and whether he returns for 2016.

“From the moment I was drafted here, this organization has been great to me,” said Goossen in a statement. “They’ve allowed me to develop as a professional football player, and I am beyond excited to continue to do so in Winnipeg. I want to contribute to the team in any way I can, and am already excited about the 2016 season.”

Selected second overall in 2014, Goossen has made 10 starts over his first two seasons.

“Matthias has really grown in his first two years in this league,” said Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters. “He is, and will continue to be a key contributor along our offensive line moving forward, and with the addition of Sukh Chungh (selected 2nd overall in 2015), we feel very strongly about how our offensive line is positioned heading into 2016.”
