Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 24/04/2016 (3474 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Himanshu Sharma reckoned that, yes, one time he did a science fair project that was on the curriculum for his grade.
But just once, and that was way back in Grade 7.
Tooba Razi and Iqra Sahar Tariq — matter-of-factly, no bragging or boasting involved, just calmly stating scientific fact — acknowledged Sunday that their science fair projects are at a master’s in chemistry university level.
Once again this year, just as in every other year at the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium, our high school students have produced science projects that would undoubtedly blow away those doctors and scientists who can understand what these kids have done.
And potentially can do for everyone and everything on the planet.
Tooba is in Grade 10 at Fort Richmond Collegiate. Her award-winning project was The identification of alpha-glucosidase inhibiting natural products from cinnamomum zeylancium.
If Big Pharma has a Google Alert set up, chances are Tooba will be getting a call about future employment.
The eight students who produced the most outstanding projects this weekend will be off to the national science fair in Montreal next month.
“My project focused on diabetes,” Tooba explained at the Investors Group gym at the University of Manitoba Sunday afternoon.
Basically, rooting through the 18-syllable Latin words, she’s studying whether cinnamon stick abstract, commonly used as medicine in southeast Asia where her family roots lie, can inhibit the enzymes that stop the breaking down of carbohydrates in the 366 million people who suffer from diabetes. Tooba wants to be a surgeon.
Iqra, a Grade 12 future pharmacist from Balmoral Hall School, also researched natural products fighting diabetes, specifically bitter melon, also used medicinally in Southeast Asia: “We need to go back to the drawing board of what worked in the past,” Iqra said.
Himanshu and Derek Yin were the only pairs to win a major award; the Grade 11 students at Fort Richmond Collegiate, designed an app hooked up to a sensor that will measure the speed, distance and posture of recovering stroke victims.
“My grandpa had a stroke — I wanted to help him recover faster,” explained Derek. “The software is something like a Fitbit. It helps them control their posture better, which side they’re leaning to.”
St. John’s-Ravenscourt Grade 11 student Justin Lin wants to develop a drug inhibiting a protein that can cause cardiac fibrosis.
Grade 10 Fort Richmond student Maitry Mistry is into creating an inexpensive device that can operate without electricity and perform x-rays through vibration — portable, cheap and ideal for remote locations lacking sophisticated labs. Maitry plans to study engineering at MIT, the only one among her peer group not heading for medicine or pharmacy.
Rohan Sethi, a Grade 8 student at St. Maurice School, studied “the synergy effect of allicin and other plant extracts on antimicrobial activity.”
OK, we’ll try again. He took garlic, along with coconut, turmeric and ginger, and researched their impact individually and in each possible combination on killing bacteria in the deadliest, dirtiest, most germ-infested evil weapon he could legally obtain — the TV remote from his living room.
“I took a sterile Q-tip and took the bacteria from the remote,” discovering that eating crushed raw garlic by itself is a great way to kill bacteria, said Rohan.
Sisler High School Grade 12 student Winnica Beltrano is designing an instruction manual that would help doctors use an MRI to detect the effect of tumours growing within the brain without causing harm to healthy cells.
Organizing committee member Ella Thomson said there were 382 students from 65 schools who entered 314 projects this year from grades 4 to 12, with grades 7 and 8 the largest group. Those numbers are pretty consistent for the past five years, she said.
Retired school principal John Jack said that there would have been at least double the participating students and schools a decade ago, but some of the principals most actively promoting science have retired, and schools are increasing their emphasis on the annual heritage fair next month — celebrating social studies — and on music and other arts competitions.
