PENTICTON, B.C. – Drake Caggiula, a high-profile college free-agent signing by Edmonton, scored 19 seconds into the third period to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead over the Winnipeg Jets Monday Young Stars Classic NHL rookie tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Joey Benik added a power-play marker to complete the 4-1 Oilers victory.
Jaeden Descheneau and Patrick Russell also scored for the Oilers.
Mikhail Berdin finished with 23 saves in the Winnipeg net while Edmonton goalie Keven Bouchard stopped 36 shots.
The Jets, who finished 0-3 in the tournament, dropped 3-2 and 4-1 decisions to the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames, respectively, earlier in the tournament.
Second Period
Patrick Russell’s power-play goal at 16:47 gave the Edmonton Oilers a 2-1 lead after two periods at the Young Stars Classic NHL rookie tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre Monday afternoon.
Winnipeg had a 20-15 edge in shots after 40 minutes.
The Jets rookies, who return to Winnipeg after today’s game for the beginning of training camp later this week, have lost both of their earlier games in the tournament.
First period
Highly touted right-winger Kyle Connor scored his first goal of the Young Stars Classic NHL rookie tournament Monday to give the Winnipeg Jets an early 1-0 lead.
Jaedon Descheneau of the Oilers scored late in the period to tie the game 1-1.
Winnipeg goalie Mikhail Berdin stopped nine shots while his Edmonton counterpart Keven Bouchard made five saves.
