The Winnipeg Jets experienced some early season power play problems that put a jolt into Day 2 of training camp.
An overnight hydro outage at MTS Iceplex caused a three-hour delay Saturday morning. The first of three on-ice sessions was set to begin at 8 a.m. but didn’t get underway until 11 a.m. The second group took the ice at 12:20 p.m. and the third at 1:40 p.m.
The Jets annual Fan Fest continued throughout the day in the parking lot and included a Q&A session with General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff on the outdoor stage.
Officials at MTS Iceplex first discovered the power outage around 5:30 a.m. They immediately contact Manitoba Hydro, who traced the issued to a farmer hitting a pole while doing some overnight tilling.
A total of 60 players are taking part in this year’s camp, which began Friday with on-ice testing. That includes the seven Jets players who just participated in the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.
Goalies Ondrej Pavelec and Connor Hellebuyck took the ice on Saturday afternoon after returning from their respective teams. Dustin Byfuglien, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, and Patrik Laine are not expected to be on the ice until Monday.
And Jacob Trouba, who also played in the tournament for Team North America, won’t be on the ice until his contract situation is resolved. He is currently a restricted free agent who has been unable to come to terms, so far, with the Jets.
In Saturday’s Group 1, the Jets forwards were grouped together as follows:
Little-Stafford-Spacek
Perreault-Connor-Burmistrov
Matthias-Armia-Petan-Stallard
*Missing: Laine (World Cup)
In Saturday’s Group 2, the Jets forwards were grouped together as follows:
Lowry-Tanev-Lipon
Copp-Thorburn-Howden-Olsen
Cormier-Lodge-Blomqvist-Denham
In Saturday’s Group 3, the Jets forwards were grouped together as follows:
Roslovic-Ehlers-Kosmachuk
DeLeo-Dano-Peluso
Harkins-Gennaro-Fronk
*Missing: Wheeler, Scheifele (World Cup), Lemieux (injured)
