The Winnipeg Jets have sent 17 hopefuls packing as they get closer to finalizing an opening night roster.
Saturday’s cuts leave 42 players remaining in training camp. That includes 25 forwards, 13 defencemen and four goalies. Of those, Mathieu Perreault, Dustin Byfuglien, Shawn Matthias, Anthony Peluso and Ryan Olsen are listed as day-to-day with injuries, while Brendan Lemieux is out week-to-week, according to the team.
The following 11 players will report directly to the Manitoba Moose, who begin their American Hockey League training camp on Monday at the MTS Iceplex: Forwards Axel Blomqvist, Patrice Cormier, Brandon Denham, Jiri Fronk and Jimmy Lodge; Defencemen Jake Baker, Nelson Nogier, Peter Stoykewych and Tyson Wilson; and goalies Mikhail Berdin and Jamie Phillips.

The following five players will return to their junior teams: Forward Jansen Harkins – Prince George (WHL), Forward Matteo Gennaro – Calgary (WHL), Defenceman Luke Green – Saint John (QMJHL), Forward Jordy Stallard – Calgary (WHL) and Forward Michael Spacek – Red Deer (WHL).
Defenceman Matt Murphy has been released from his amateur tryout agreement.
The Jets are enjoying an off-day Saturday, coming off Friday night’s 5-1 preseason win over the Edmonton Oilers which gives them a 2-1-0 record in exhibition play. Training camp resumes on Sunday, with the team travelling to Calgary to take on the Flames.
The Jets are back in action on home ice Monday night against Ottawa. They will then finish their seven-game exhibition schedule with road games next Thursday in Edmonton and next Saturday in Minnesota.
The regular season kicks off on Thursday Oct. 13 when the Jets play host to the Carolina Hurricanes.
