I recently picked up Homegoing by first-time novelist Yaa Gyasi and was completely blown away. Even though I’ve finished the book, it is still sitting on my night table because I am not ready to stow it away just yet. This book follows the lives of two sisters and their lineage over the course of 300 years and many generations. Each character is vivid and complex. Through each of their stories, Gyasi reveals the ongoing impact of slavery on their lives in Africa and in the United States. This book is not only beautifully and expertly crafted, it is important.
