In an unusual about-face, the Vancouver Canucks this afternoon have sent right-winger Michael Grabner back to the Manitoba Moose after calling him this morning.
The NHL team was apparently surprised to find centre Pavol Demitra on the ice for practice in Vancouver and also that he’d be available for Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay.
Demitra suffered an injury to a finger on his left hand late in Tuesday’s game in Montreal.
So knowing that his services weren’t urgently required and also knowing that the Moose have their own injury and call-up woes, the Canucks not only sent Grabner back, but had forward Alexandre Bolduc join him for the trip to Winnipeg.
Both should be available for Manitoba’s game here Friday night against Peoria.
In two recalls, Bolduc has played seven games for the Canucks.
Even with that late-day news, the Moose are still missing six regulars — defencemen Max Fortunus and Zack Fitzgerald and forwards Mark Cullen and Michel Ouellet due to injury and forwards Ray Sawada and defenceman Mark Fistric on NHL recall.
Also this afternoon, the Moose announced they have released forward Oren Eizenman from his pro try-out after the latest three games he played and have called up Dan Gendur from Victoria (ECHL).
Friday’s game here is Manitoba’s first home game in nearly a month.
