VANCOUVER — A bit of French flair sent Canada tumbling from the ranks of the undefeated Sunday in women’s play at the 2009 world junior curling championships.

The lightly regarded French — skipped by 17-year-old Marie Coulot — upset Team Canada 7-4 to hand the Canadians their first loss of the tournament at the new Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre.

The loss dropped Canada — represented by Kaitlyn Lawes’ foursome from Winnipeg — into a tie for first with defending champion Scotland, each with 4-1 records.

In junior men’s play, Team Canada, skipped by Brett Gallant of P.E.I., went into play Sunday evening undefeated at 4-0.

The French began women’s action Sunday with a 1-3 mark. But they performed more like a team contending for the title as they stunned Canada with three in the fourth end to take a 4-2 advantage.

“She (Coulot) was making everything today,” said Lawes, the bronze medallist from last year.
