A man accused of killing a Winnipeg high school student in 2016 will head straight to trial for second-degree murder.

The provincial prosecutions office authorized a direct indictment for Nicholas Bell-Wright, who was 22 when he was arrested in the death of 17-year-old River East Collegiate student Cooper Nemeth.

Hundreds searched for the popular hockey player after he went missing from a house party on Valentine’s Day. His body was discovered nearly a week later in a recycling bin at a Valley Gardens home.

Bell-Wright was arrested shortly after the body was found.

The Crown’s request for a direct indictment means there will be no preliminary hearing. The trial date has not yet been set.

Crown attorney Mike Himmelman gave notice of the direct indictment in court Thursday.

A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial. That process can be skipped either when the accused waives it or the Crown orders a direct indictment.

Manitoba Justice’s policy on direct indictments states they may only be used in “exceptional circumstances” that outweigh the benefits of a preliminary hearing.

Another high-profile homicide case in which prosecutors ordered a direct indictment includes that of the man accused of killing Tina Fontaine. Raymond Cormier, 54, is heading directly to trial for second-degree murder. He’s accused of killing the 15-year-old, who was found dead in the Red River in August 2014.
