Two police officers face several charges — including attempted murder and fabricating evidence — following a police chase that ended in a shooting in July 2007.

Kristofer Shawn Fournier was shot on July 16, 2007 shortly before 2:45 a.m.

City police said in a release today that two uniform officers responded to a call regarding a robbery in the 1700 block of Portage Avenue. The officers became involved in a vehicle pursuit, trying to apprehend an individual they believed was a potential suspect.

A collision occurred between the police cruiser and the vehicle being operated by Fournier, and a foot chase ensued ending in the area of Grant Avenue and Lindsay Street, police said.

During the incident, an officer’s firearm was discharged, hitting Fournier in the lower body. He was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The subsequent investigation concluded that Fournier was not involved in the robbery, police said today.

Police investigated and the completed investigation was forwarded to Manitoba Justice, which retained an external Crown Attorney to review the investigative report.

Manitoba Justice has reviewed the report and directed that the following charges be laid against two officers who have been members of the Winnipeg police for six years:

One officer will be charged with:

  • Aiding and abetting dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Fabricating evidence
  • Attempt murder
  • Discharging a firearm with intent to wound
  • Aggravated assault with a weapon
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
  • Careless use of a weapon

The other officer will be charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Fabricating evidence
  • Aiding and abetting discharge of a firearm with intent to wound
  • Aiding and abetting aggravated assault with a weapon

The officers’ names won’t be released until they’re officially charged on Friday.

Their first appearance will be June 1. The officers have been removed from the workplace and placed on administrative leave.
