A serious crash in south Winnipeg early Saturday sent two people to hospital and left a blue sedan wedged in a metal strip-mall sign.
A vehicle travelling south on St. Anne’s Road crashed at the corner of Gosford Avenue shortly after 5 a.m., police said.
Winnipeg police Patrol Sgt. Sandra Martin said fire officials had to extricate the vehicle’s driver and passenger from the vehicle.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, was taken to hospital in stable condition. The 48-year-old male passenger was taken to hospital in critical condition, later upgraded to serious but stable.
Martin wouldn’t say whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
St. Anne’s between Gosford Avenue and Woodydell Avenue was closed for several hours while police investigated.
Darcy Arbuthnot couldn’t believe that the vehicle’s occupants survived after seeing the twisted metal and bits of debris scattered around the crash scene.
"That’s really unreal," said Arbuthnot, who lives nearby. "That’s wrapped around the sign. I don’t mean to be negative, but I wouldn’t have thought they’d live."
