GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. — Kevin Martin bounced back from a Thursday night loss and secured a quarter-final berth at the Grey Power Players’ Championship on Friday night.
The Edmonton skip avenged a 6-5 loss to cross-town rival Randy Ferbey by way of an easy 8-1 win over Dale Matchett of Churchill, Ont.
Martin said the team, which finished second at the worlds, was off in the Thursday loss and needed to focus on one thing. “Mechanics,” he stressed.
In the other B-qualifier, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen peppered Ontario’s Wayne Middaugh 8-2.
Martin and McEwen move on to Saturday quarter-finals, where they join Ferbey and Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont.
The women’s quarter-finals were set for Friday’s late draw. Those games feature Shannon Kleibrink (Calgary) vs. Rachel Homan (Ottawa); Kelly Scott (Kelowna) vs. Krista McCarville (Thunder Bay); Cheryl Bernard vs. Heather Rankin in an all-Calgary affair; and Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg) vs. Sherry Middaugh (Coldwater, Ont.).
