Hey there, time traveller!

Whether you’re a long-time leader or you’re new to the role, a little coaching can go a long way to help you hone your skills at the helm.
At Legacy Bowes Group, leadership development remains one of the main pillars of service offered by the long-standing company.
Business partner Bill Medd offers his expert approach to guide leaders towards even greater success — for themselves, for their team and for their organization.
“When leaders are brand new in the role, I help them understand how to become a leader. There’s a lot to learn in regards to competency, goal setting and motivating others,” Medd explains.
“I also work with experienced leaders who want to get better at delegating and developing people. There’s one-on-one coaching that helps middle managers get through that process. Then for executives, the focus is more on character and behaviour. We help them build a better team and manage succession planning.”
Within each of these categories, Medd offers oneon- one coaching as well as specific programs to emphasize different aspects of leadership. Clients range from leaders in government and large corporations to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations.
“We deal with everybody, but the conversations are always around the same two things: leading people and managing change,” Medd says.
“A lot of people are good leaders without having a coach, but the reality is that we all have blind spots we don’t know about. We might have gaps that won’t allow us to get to the next level unless we address them.”
As a leadership coach, Medd takes the time to listen and ask questions about each unique situation.
“One of the great things is that you can tell me what’s going on,” he says. “I’m not your boss or a peer. Instead, I’m a good sounding board and I’ll challenge you to improve.”
With more than 30 years of business experience, Medd understands how to guide leaders to find the best possible path for themselves, their company and their employees.
“Leadership is tough because it’s not black and white. We’re all creatures of habit, so we work to identify the good habits as well as the ones that we need to change,” he says.
“Often people know that they’re struggling but they have trouble articulating it. My job is to find out about the problem and to challenge them to improve.”
This process can take time and might involve different approaches to workplace communication or conflict resolution.
“Coaching isn’t just one conversation. It’s 10 to 15 sessions over six or eight months where we get to know each other and try some things out,” Medd says.
“Sometimes things will get worse before they get better. My job is to be the accountability person and say ‘Let’s try it again.’ I’m also the one that gives a little push so you don’t go back to your old comfort zone.”
Whether he’s coaching individuals or teams of people, Medd helps clients to discover the leader within themselves.
“I help leaders understand that character and behaviour matter. We’re always challenging people to become their own leader, and that will look slightly different for each individual,” he says. “Everybody has something they would like to get better at, and it’s my job to help them achieve that goal.”
