The provincial government wants to know how Manitobans feel about mental health and addictions services across the province.
Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen put out a call Monday for people to participate in one of two online surveys to help further the province’s plans to develop a mental health and addictions strategy.
“Those living with mental health and addictions challenges, their family members, the public and health-care providers all have important perspectives on how we can better co-ordinate our mental health and addictions programs and services,” Goertzen said in a news release.
“These surveys will allow Manitobans to share their views, helping us develop a focused provincial mental health and addiction strategic plan that will improve access to and co-ordination of mental health and addiction services in the province.”
Earlier this year, the province hired VIRGO Planning and Evaluation Consultants Inc. to help develop the province’s strategic plan. The VIRGO team is conducting an evidence review, looking through relevant documents, consulting with the public and, now, conducting the survey.
There are two specific survey streams, one for service providers and another for the public, specifically individuals and families who have had some experience with mental health or addictions issues and related services in Manitoba. Once a person picks their stream, they can then choose to answer survey questions specifically about mental health issues, addictions issues or both.
Survey information will be kept confidential, according to Goertzen. People have until Oct. 13 to participate.
“We know there is work to do to strengthen the system and improve access to and co-ordination of mental health and addictions services,” he said in the release. “Residents and front-line providers will help us do just that by sharing their experiences.”
The government said its expecting VIRGO’s draft report by the end of 2017, followed by a full report in the spring.
