Two Winnipeg men are charged with second-degree murder in a July incident in which a man was shot at the front door of a North End home.

It took weeks for investigators to connect the dots in the case once they learned there was no link between the suspects and the victim, police said.

Trevor Bodnarek, also known as Trevor Desjarlais, died after being shot outside a home in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue on the night of July 21.

“We believe everyone in the residence was… innocent. It may have been a mistaken address,” police spokesman Const. Rob Carver said Friday.

“Trevor Bodnarek, as far as investigators have been able to determine, had no connection in any sort of activity that would have put him in harm’s way,” Carver said. Nor was there anything in the victim’s past that would have made him a target.

The arrests were made Wednesday evening. Police said the accused have no known links to gangs.

“Any death is a tragedy but there are degrees of tragedy, and when someone is murdered and there’s nothing that has happened that would have put them in harm’s way, it’s just all the more difficult for the community to accept it,” Carver said.

He said police learned someone else answered a knock on the door and the shooting happened seconds later.

Initially, police thought Bodnarek lived in the residence. It turned out he was visiting at the time.

Craig Dylan Monkman, 19, was already in custody on an unrelated matter when police laid second-degree murder charges Wednesday.

Albert Kelly Thomas, 34, also faces second-degree murder charges. He was taken into custody Wednesday.
