A Winnipeg lawyer has been disbarred from the profession for misusing his clients’ money.

James Graeme Earle Young misappropriated more than $82,000 over the course of four years, the Law Society of Manitoba decided in a ruling issued earlier this month. The appropriate penalty, the board decided after hearing Young’s case earlier this year, was disbarment.

Young “made unauthorized use of” clients’ money seven times between 2011 and 2015, in some cases depositing money into his own bank account that was supposed to be held in trust. He was also found guilty of breach of trust and misleading clients.

He misappropriated a total of $82,436.57 from three different clients while he worked at the firm Restall & Restall LLP.

Young was previously suspended from practicing law for eight months starting in July 2015, after he pleaded guilty to 19 counts of professional misconduct.
