Get cultured

Soak up the last of Culture Days today. The weekend-long celebration of arts and culture includes dozens of events across the province. In Winnipeg, Prairie Theatre Exchange (third floor, Portage Place) is offering a behind-the-scenes tour at 1 p.m. Chocolatier Constance Popp (180 Provencher Blvd.) has chocolate-making demos and live music by the Mulvey Street Maniacs from 2 to 5 p.m.

Snap to it

The Flash Photographic Festival comes into focus this month, with more than 40 shutterbugs showing off their best work at venues across the city throughout October. The event kicks off at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (300 Memorial Blvd.) Monday at 8 p.m. A photo/bike tour of the West End takes place Saturday, starting at the Central Park fountain at 1 p.m.

Tune in

John K. Samson, Mulligrub and Well Sister perform a benefit concert at the West End Cultural Centre (586 Ellice Ave.) Tuesday for the family of Errol Greene. Greene died while in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre last year. Money raised will help cover the family’s legal fees. Show starts at 8 p.m. with tickets available through Ticketfly or at the door.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (85 Israel Asper Way) offers free admission the first Wednesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Costume Museum of Canada’s latest exhibit is also open (and free) from noon to 4 p.m. The Eve of Elegance features glitzy New Year’s Eve outfits through the ages. It’s tucked inside the Dalnavert Museum and Visitors’ Centre at 61 Carlton St.

Hops aboard

As the local beer scene expands Winnipeg Tasting Tours are becoming increasingly popular. Online bookings are available months in advance (winnipegtastingtours.ca). Tours begin at PEG Beer Co. (125 Pacific Ave.) before venturing to three other microbreweries (stops vary by day). Food, beer and behind-the-scenes tours are included in the $80 booze cruise.

Have a laugh

Two comedy shows are vying for guffaws Friday. The Winnipeg Comedy Showcase is back at the Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.), starting at 9 p.m. The line-up includes Paul Rabliauskas, RobYn Slade and Jane Testar. Meantime, the Gas Station Arts Centre (445 River Ave.) is hosting 12 female comics with host Erica Sigurdson, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for both shows, available at the respective theatres and online.

Shimmy and shake

Whether with a hula-hoop or partner in tow, Saturday is a good time to get moving. Baila: Freestyle is on at Saddlery on Market (114 Market Ave.) from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., with instructors Jonel Fabro and Shaqueel Lawrence teaching hip-hop and social dance moves. Tickets are $7 on Eventbrite or $10 at the door. At The Forks, a free hoop jam is shaking down from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for World Hoop Day.
