❯❯ About the FLAMES
It’s the home opener for the Flames, who are coming off a 3-0 road loss to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. The Oilers captain fired all three goals on new Calgary goalie Mike Smith, acquired from the Arizona Coyotes during the off-season. Despite surrendering the hat trick, Smith was named the game’s second star after blocking 42 shots.
RW Jaromir Jagr, 45, the NHL’s second-leading scorer of all time with 1,914 points, signed a one-year, US$1-million deal with Calgary and could make his season debut against Winnipeg. He has been skating on a line with LW Kris Versteeg and C Sam Bennett during practice. The Czech superstar will be playing in his 24th NHL season.

Last season, LW Johnny Gaudreau led the club with 18 goals and 43 assists in 72 games, while C Sean Monahan was the top goal-getter with 27 tallies while playing all 82 contests for Calgary. Former Jets foward Michael Frolik played all 82 as well and finished with 44 points, the most he’s accumulated since his rookie season (2008-09) in Florida.
Former Brandon Wheat Kings centre Glen Gulutzan is beginning his second season as Flames head coach. He guided Calgary last season to a 45-33-4 record (a 17-point improvement from the 2015-16 campaign) and the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Calgary was swept by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the playoffs.
