Holiday cheer at the West End
The West End Cultural Centre (WECC) hosted its annual holiday dinner and concert on Dec. 6. More than 110 west-central-area residents enjoyed a full turkey dinner served up by WECC volunteers and entertainment from hoop dancer Shanley Spence, emcee Al Simmons and the band Eagle and Hawk before the kids in attendance were greeted by Santa Claus. Donors for this year’s event were Foodfare, Safeway, Vita Health, Jonathan’s Farm, Fenez Follies Farm and Toad Hall Toys. For more information about the WECC, visit wecc.ca.
Japanese Cultural Association gala
The Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba held its gala dinner fundraiser on Oct. 28 at Canad Inns Polo Park Destination Centre. More than 220 people attended the gala, the theme of which was “Oiwai,” the Japanese word for celebration. The event honoured two longtime volunteers, Sam Matsuo and Jim Hisanaga, for their service to the cultural association and the Japanese-Canadian community. The event’s guest speaker was Dr. Fred Aoki, a professor in the department of pharmacology and therapeutics at the University of Manitoba.
