Carey-Hodgson duo earn last playoff berth in pre-Olympic mixed doubles curling event

Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson won a tiebreaker game Friday morning to become the eighth and final playoff team at the 2018 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials in Portage La Prairie.

Carey and Hodgson scored a deuce in an extra end to win 9-7 over Nancy Martin and Catlin Schneider.

The win advances Carey/Hodgson to the playoff round, beginning at 3 p.m. at Stride Place.

They’ll play against Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant on the opening draw of the playoffs. In other games, Jennifer Jones and Mark Nichols will play against Jill Officer and Reid Carruthers; Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris will play against Dana Ferguson and Brendan Bottcher; and Laura Crocker and Geoff Walker will play against Val Sweeting and Brad Gushue.

The playoff format is a double knockout playing down to a four-team championship round, which begins Saturday afternoon.

Sunday’s final is at 1 p.m. The winner will represent Canada in mixed doubles curling at next month’s 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
