GANGNEUNG — Winnipeg’s Kaitlyn Lawes is a two-time Olympic gold medallist.

Lawes and partner John Morris defeated Switzerland 10-3 in the gold medal final of mixed doubles curling here Tuesday night Korea time.

It is the second consecutive Games that Lawes has won Olympic gold, adding to the gold she won in women’s curling in Sochi in 2014 as third for Jennifer Jones.

It’s also the second gold medal for Winnipeg-born Morris, who previously won gold in men’s curling in Vancouver in 2010 as third for Kevin Martin.

It’s also the third gold medal of these Games for Canada, raising Canada’s overall medal total to eight.

Lawes and Morris become the first Canadian curlers ever to capture two gold medals in curling — and just the fifth and sixth curlers ever.

Canada broke open a 2-2 game in the third end, capitalizing on a flash by Switzerland’s Martin Rios to score a four-ender and seize control.

The gold-medal victory caps a remarkable run for Lawes and Morris, who only formed a mixed doubles team in December and practised just once together prior to winning the Canadian mixed doubles trials in Portage last month.

After losing their opening game here last Thursday, Lawes and Morris were perfect the rest of the way, winning eight straight games to capture gold.

Lawes and Morris will receive their medals in a ceremony Wednesday at the Olympic Medals Plaza in Pyeongchang.
