Starting this weekend, Winnipeg cab companies will have some competition, as the city’s first ride-sharing option will hit the streets.

TappCar, an Edmonton-based ride-sharing company similar to Uber and Lyft, announced today it had secured MPI coverage for its drivers and would begin operations in the city Friday.

That means the company will have passenger-vehicle-for-hire coverage for every vehicle registered and operated under its banner. Drivers will also have personal insurance for whenever they’re not operating commercial rides.

BORIS MINKEVICH / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS FILES TappCar spokesman Pascal Ryffel has confirmed the company will start offering service in Winnipeg Friday.

“The safety of Winnipeggers comes first, so we’re proud to announce that we’ve secured MPI insurance requirements for ride-sharing operators, which are well designed to protect drivers, ratepayers and third parties,” TappCar spokesman Pascal Ryffel said.

“We are very thankful to MPI for putting together this innovative, creative insurance plan for companies like ours, and look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

The company also announced they’ll pay for three months of insurance for the first 25 drivers hired for their Winnipeg operation.

TappCar will be the first ride-sharing company to operate in Winnipeg.
