Red River Co-op repayment cheques are in the mail and they’re a little heavier than last year.

The Winnipeg-based co-operative sent out $28.3 million worth of cheques to its 280,000 members in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

That’s up about $300,000 from the year before, though still a little shy of the $30 million in rebates in 2015.

The allocation to the members of 6.82 per cent on fuel purchases works out to an average of 6.3 cents per litre, based on an average retail pump price of 91.7 cents per litre, five per cent on pharmacy purchases and two per cent on food purchases.

Co-op members receive an annual share of profits, based on their purchases.

In 2017, Red River Co-op opened the renovated Ness Gas Bar (2251 Ness Ave.) and reopened its grocery store in Southdale (77 Vermillion Rd.) after major renovations. The rebuilt Rossmere Gas Bar (1070 Henderson Hwy.) reopened earlier in 2018 and plans are underway to renovate the food store in Grant Park (1120 Grant Ave.). Business is expected to be uninterrupted as the upgrades are done with a fall grand opening scheduled.

Red River Co-op has 35 gas bars, five cardlocks, three food stores and a stand-alone pharmacy in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas of Selkirk, Stonewall, Teulon, Gimli, Ste. Agathe, Niverville, Oakbank, Headingley, Kenora and Dryden.
