There were tense moments at the province’s largest hospital when two weapons were found in a patient’s room on Tuesday.

Bronwyn Penner Holigroski, a spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, said on Wednesday that a staff member at the Health Sciences Centre spotted a weapon in a patient’s room just before midnight.

Hospital staff called security and, after the unit was secured, searched the patient’s room.

During the search a small BB gun and a pocket knife were found. The patient was held on the unit until police arrived.

A doctor assessed the patient and cleared them medically for release before they were taken into custody by police.

“We appreciate the quick and calm response of staff to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” Penner Holigroski said. “Those staff involved are being provided with follow-up support.”
