I recently found a box of old Manitoba licence plates in my mom’s garage. They date from 1928 to 1976.
The older ones have some rust and wear, while the newer ones are in perfect condition. Most are just a single plate and a few are pairs. Do they have much value? When did they first start issuing licence plates in Manitoba?

Dear Tom,
The first licence plates were issued as a pair in Manitoba in 1911. Prior to that, you were issued a number and would have a plate made up, usually a piece of leather with brass or metal numbers.
Up until 1914, the plates were steel with a porcelain finish. Licence plates have been issued every year, with some years issuing a metal tab or strip. In 1944, the province issued a window decal. Plates were also issued for bicycles, motorcycles, trailers, etc.
All of these plates are collectible. There are many different factors when determining their value. The plate’s condition and having a pair is very important. Older plates are generally more collectible.
Unfortunately, the photo you sent was too blurry to use. Here is a photo of some plates I recently purchased. Your plates from the 1920s in their condition would sell up to $40 each. Later plates would sell for $10 and up. Licence plates dated prior to 1919 can sell for hundreds of dollars.
